Animal Crossing New Leaf: Money Making Tips from Yours Truly
NOTE: This article is basically for ThisIsSirius and DoctorWhoCares, who I personally know to have Animal Crossing New Leaf. But I guess for people who randomly get on and happen to see this or any of my friends on here are bored, they are welcome to read this and leave comments/corrections on their page or any of my posts. I am starting to ramble on like a computerized machine, and I am also starting to get very distracted because I smell something that is very similar to candy and carpet cleaner although that is very strange because I am sitting in my office right now; WHY ARE YOU EVEN READING THIS??? Enjoy.
Okayyyy, so after you have read that very queer note I left up above, you are probably thinking "ZeldaForever, get to the point already! What does Animal Crossing have to do with candy and carpet cleaner?" Well, to answer that question, I REALLY HAVE NO IDEA.
I'm getting off track here...
ANYWAYS, this is a list of ways to maximize profits that I have learned by trial and error. Also, I have always had the Beautiful Town ordinance and never enacted the Wealthy Town ordinance, and I still have more money than ThisIsSirius and DoctorWhoCares combined (seriously, look at the picture that is right there on the screen. Yes, that one. I'll hit four million by my next island trip.), so... I'm willing to bet these methods will work if followed correctly and NOT OVER-THOUGHT. Before anyone asks, NO, I am not a hoarder; my town actually has quite a few public works projects and my house is nearly complete, with a princess set from GracieGrace in the left room... working on a gorgeous set in the right one. If I hadn't accomplished those things I'd probably be on eight million by now. But anywho, scroll down to see mah methods.

Okay, numero one.
There is such thing as luck. If your luck is bad, you fall over (refer to the daily faceplant post), get less money for stuff, and animals aren't as friendly. If your luck is good, those things... don't happen, I guess.
Katrina, the fortune teller, can tell you about your luck and the lucky item of the day to wear, which either increases your good luck or helps you evade bad luck. This is not something that should be troublesome, but OH WELL. I don't pay very much attention to it anyway, unless I faceplant every ten seconds.
I HAVE heard, however, that a four-leaf clover will also increase your good luck.

Also,
TRIFORCE!!!
TRIFORCE!!!
Numero two!
I have heard that good feng shui can increase your chances of... good things happening. I don't know how feng shui and luck cooperate, but I think luck is less important. The picture below shows the item color placement for a four-by-four, eight-by-eight, and sixteen-by-sixteen room. I myself am not very good at following these rules (XD I just put a whole series in a room and nothing else), but oh well.
Placing yellow items in the correct squares will increase the amount of bells you find.
Placing red items in the correct squares will increase the number of items you find.
Placing green items in the correct squares increase your overall luck... I guess. So that's how it works...
And I think you can put anything you want in white squares.

Numero three!
Okay, so you guys have probably heard me mention the island several times in this post already (I think). Well, the island is the most well-known way to get money easily.
DoctorWhoCares, time traveling is NOT considered cheating if you are going from one day to the next or skipping ahead a few hours. It IS considered cheating if you skip from season to season to get the benefits from seasonal items and events. I looked this up myself.
All you have to do is set the time after 9 or 10 PM and head off on the boat to the island. Then you can run around catching beetles and sharks to your heart's content. If you are very bad at catching sharks and/or beetles, then I'm sorry, I cannot help you. Try to get better; I wish you the best of luck.
Anyway, below is a list of all the things I recommend catching at the island. Anything that is NOT on the list, I don't... NOT recommend (Whut?), I just think they're not really worth it. Okay, begin list (It's not really a list. More like... an album. *She said list... list this...*). I put the Wealthy Town Ordinance prices in parentheses; click on the pictures to see them better as well as see the prices.

Bugs
Fish
Deep-sea creatures
The only sea creature really worth getting is the Giant Isopod, which sells for 10,000 (12,000). These are very rare, and I doubt anyone really wants to spend their time at the island swimming around and looking for this thing.
Numero four!
In all the other Animal Crossing games, the money rock has been a staple for getting a daily amount of starter bells. If your pocket is empty when you start up the game, grab your shovel and go find the money rock!
In the picture to the right I had "good wealth luck" that day, which meant I got 32,000 bells from the money rock. Usually, (if your timing is correct) the amount that comes out will be 16,100.
Basically all you have to do is dig two or three holes behind you (I dug two in the picture) to act as a wall and keep you from getting knocked backwards when you strike the rock. Then you face the rock and repeatedly tap A to strike it over and over again until it has been taxed out. (HARDY HAR MONEY ROCK TAXED OUT!!!) Only one rock out of the rest in your town (I have like... seven) will be the money rock, but the money is worth it. Another rock will be breakable and have an ore piece in it, but we'll get to ore later.

Number cinco. XD
I don't have any clever pictures for fruit, but I shall get right to the point anyway (did I just say "shall?"). When you first bought the game and became the mayor of your town, you probably noticed that your town had fruit trees! Well the problem is, those fruit trees are virtually worthless. Yaaaaay!!!
There are five types of fruits you can have in you town in the beginning, and seven types of tropical fruit you can get later on, six coming from the island. Apples, pears, oranges, peaches, or cherries will be on those trees of yours. If you are a fruit collector like I was, get those other fruits by doing favors for animals or visiting friends! The tropical fruits you can get from the island are bananas, coconuts, lemons, lychees, durians, and mangoes. These are not really special but they're nice to look at and worth a little more than native fruits. The last fruit is a persimmon, which you can only get through animals or buy from T&T Emporium. These are also tropical fruits, and they look like tomatooooooeeeessss... (I dun like tomatoes)
Native fruit trees bear fruit on them that can sell for 100 bells, TOPS. The upside to them is, those are your potential perfect fruit trees! Only your native fruit trees can bear perfect fruit (learned that the hard way. My native fruit was oranges; I tried putting fertilizer by apple trees. Didn't work.), and perfect native fruit will sell for 600 a pop in you town. But if they are "perfect foreign fruit," (aka you take them to another town where they are foreign), they'll sell for 3,000! Ermahgersh I have never tried this and I have no wish to do so but I know it works!!! :D (that sounded dumb)
Tropical fruit trees (you can get them from island tours) will give you fruit that will sell for 250 each. They will never bear perfect fruit, so they are boring to talk about. They do look nice, though. Occasionally Reese will pay premium for them, making them the same price as foreign fruit, but that's like once a month or something...

Okay, foreign fruit! Sometimes villagers are just nice and will hand you a piece of foreign fruit or mail it to you, for whatever reason you want to MAIL FRUIT!!! I already had cherry trees, but Purrl here barged into my house without invitation, forked over a cherry and left. Nice.
Also, if you are still in the first part of the game where you are trying to get an approval rating, your secretary, Isabelle, will give you a basket of foreign fruit if you follow her advice for living (I think you need to get her a seashell). She gave me pears, and now I have a nice pear orchard right behind the town hall. Thanks, Isabelle!
Foreign fruit will sell for 500 a piece, so plant those fruits that the villagers give you and get more fruit to sell. There's something I like to do at Re-Tail with baskets of foreign fruits, but we'll get to those later.

I have also heard that bamboo is classified as a fruit in this game, since you can dig the shoots up from the ground and sell them for 750 each (look at those star shapes in the bottom right corner. Dig those up). I think you can also stack them in baskets. Just to make people happy, I'll spill a few facts: you can buy bamboo from T&T Emporium or get it from a friend. They spread like wildfire if you don't tend to them often, so dig up those shoots and sell them. They're worth more than foreign fruit.
Six-o! (What's six in Spanish???)
Special events! Yush, the specialness of the special events is just too special for me to talk about, especially when my mind is full of asbestos (THAT'S NOT GOOD.)
Just kidding, there's no asbestos in my brain. Anyway, special events like Festivale, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving (the Harvest Festival), and sometimes even Fishing tourneys will get you rare furniture you can sell for a high price. Unfortunately, I have found that (except for the fishing tourney) the special items you get cannot be put in the flea market.
You can get the Pavé series in Festivale, the Harvest series in the Harvest Festival, Spooky/Creepy furniture on Halloween and the Egg series from Easter. I personally have the most fun on Halloween, although I have only played Halloween in City Folk and I'm looking forward to the New Leaf version (I'm getting off track). Basically my point is, the furniture from these series-es (whut?) are not really that attractive to the eye and can instead be sold for their default high prices. But SOMETIMES Reese pays premium for "furniture" in general. MORE CASH, PEOPLES.

In several Fishing Tourneys, you are only catching a specific type of fish and trying to get the biggest one. Those are no fun. In others, you can catch whatever fish you want and turn it in. THOSE are fun. Either way, you get a prize if you break your record. So, my method in variety competitions is to catch tiny fish, record their sizes on a piece of paper, and work my way up to large fish. So, I win the Tourney and get a bunch of free furniture at the same time.
Sept. (That's French for seven. Not the month abbreviation)
Okay, NOW I shall get to ore. First of all, there is a rock out of place in your town every day that will break and produce ore if you hit it with a shovel. Secondly, using a silver shovel (purchase from the museum souvenir shop) on a money rock will increase the chances of ore popping out instead of money. Rubies, amethysts, sapphires, and emeralds sell for 2,000 bells. Silver nuggets sell for 3,000, and gold nuggets for 4,000.
As you can see from my picture taken several months ago, my house used to be chock-full of ore (the side rooms were also full.). I was waiting for the day Reese would pay premium for ore, since I had seen her do so in the past. But, I got impatient and taking ThisIsSirius's advice, sold it all only to learn that Reese was paying premium for ore THREE DAYS LATER. DX Thanks, gurl. You still mah friend.
Anyway, ore can be used to refurbish select furniture or even create furniture (3 gold nuggets), or you can just sell them. I myself sell everything BUT the golden nuggets (although they sell for the most) because I am working on a golden room. Yay me.

So anyway, this is what it looks like when you hit a money rock with a silver shovel and ore pops out. Of course, the ore types vary. Once I got an ore rock where only two were NOT gold nuggets (that was epic, I nearly went wild). In this picture I got three amethysts, two sapphires, two silver nuggets and a gold nugget. Rubies and emeralds do come out as well, they just didn't for this particular rock.
I am starting to talk about the obvious, so I shall just end this section here.

Part eight.
I absolutely love the flea-market spaces in Re-Tail. Through trial and error I have found that animals will buy things from you for (sometimes) a little more than triple the price, but not over 10,000. Unless your feng shui and friendships are good or something. The things you cannot put in the flea market spaces are special event furniture, fish, and bugs. Grrr.
In the picture to the left, you can see that my character is sad because she can't keep up with supply and demand. I used to sell only fossils at Re-Tail for 9,999, and animals would buy them all the time. There's a catch, though. If the original price is less than 2,500, villagers will say the price you set is way too high, or be a bit hesitant to buy it and will scold themselves if they actually DO buy it. And if you use the technique that I am about to tell you, they will act all confused on whether or not they did the right thing in buying a basket of fruit.

So, as I mentioned earlier in part 5, there is something fun I like to do at Re-Tail with fruit baskets. You may have guessed it already, but yes: I DO pick baskets of fruit and sell them for a little over three times the price, and animals still buy them. Put five or six (Doesn't really matter) foreign non-tropical fruit in a basket and place them in the flea market for 9,999 bells. The same works with four bamboo shoots in a basket.
Now I don't know what's going on in these animals' heads, but if they are dumb enough to pay triple for something they can go outside and shake off a tree or dig up for free, I'm willing to turn Re-Tail into a fresh produce and dead bones shop.
Sometimes I sell Silver ore for 9,999 too. They fall for it. Regular ore will sell for about 7,999 bells, and I'm a bit hesitant to set the price over that. Sometimes one bell is what makes animals decide whether they want to buy or not.

Section nein. I mean nine.
I have actually never played the stalk market. In fact, I only started an hour ago (literally, I bought 20 for 95 each). All I know is that you buy turnips from Joan on Sunday mornings (her prices are between 90 and 110, I think) and attempt to sell them at a profit the rest of the week. From what I've researched, the amount Reese pays for turnips fluctuates during the week and changes at noon. The price can spike way up at least once during the week, possibly even twice if your luck is good. I've seen pictures where Reese pays over 600 bells per turnip - something I really wish will happen to me.
As Joan warns you, turnips are "sensitive to time paradoxes." So, she's trying to warn you that time traveling will instantly kill your turnips. That's not completely true. Her words are true in past Animal Crossing games, but in New Leaf you can time travel forward to your heart's content. Just to be sure, I placed my turnips on a table in my house, as the internet said (famous last words XD) they wouldn't rot while I time traveled until the next Sunday. I haven't tried time traveling backwards with them yet (I barely do that anyway), and I don't really wanna try.

10. (I'm running out of title ideas)
The picture explains it. Updating your dream town usually gets you 5,000 free bells. But please... make your town appealing. If you have read the news posts on the home page, you may have noticed that I visited a few dream towns and was annoyed at the blank towns I woke in. I felt like those people were desperate for 5,000 bells (Awhmahgawsh, just sell some fruit, geez) or just desperately wanted to be out there in the ACNL network. Nothing ticks me off more than waking up in a blank town (except for broken connections and Resetti). So, if you are going to follow this section here, make sure your town looks nice.
RANDOM LITTLE PROCLAIMATION HERE
This is what following my advice does for you. Aaaand, I'm aiming for twice this amount after I pay off my house.
Your Animal Crossing house will cost you a total of 7,595,800 bells, no joke. So get saving, peoples.
